The charity
Empowered by Light is a non-profit organisation that brings solar power to off-grid, vulnerable communities. They are now focused on setting up fire stations in Puerto Rico with solar power so they can support their communities with water, medical services and electricity. Crystal Palace native, Richard Birt, now a captain with the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Service, is part of Empowered by Light. He’s travelling to the island for a second time 14-18 November to complete works at a fire station where they’ve already installed a solar water maker. People will be able to charge their phones, medical devices, get clean drinking water and receive medical treatment from the firefighter medics. The system will power the stations lights and communications which are absolutely critical.
